Purpose: Opioids may affect changes in the corrected QT interval (QTc) during anesthetic induction. This study examine whether a single bolus of remifentanil would prolong QTc after laryngeal mask airway (LMA) insertion during sevoflurane induction. Materials and Methods: Forty women of American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status 1 (ASA PS1) undergoing gynecological surgery were studied. All patients were induced using three vital capacity inhalation inductions with 5% sevoflurane. Two minutes after induction, the inspiratory concentration of sevoflurane was reduced to 2%. Using double-blinded randomization, patients were allocated into one of two groups, receiving either saline (placebo group, n = 20) or 0.25 μg.kg-1 remifentanil (remifentanil group, n = 20) over a period of thirty seconds. Sixty seconds later, LMA insertion was performed. Recordings were taken with a 12lead electrocardiogram at baseline, 2 min after induction and 1 and 3 min after LMA insertion. QTc was calculated by Bazett’s formula. The mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were also measured at each time point. Results: The QTc interval was significantly prolonged in the placebo group as compared to the remifentanil group at 1 min after LMA insertion (467.8 ± 16.5 vs. 442.7 ± 21.3 ms, p < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference in QTc at 3 min after LMA insertion between the two groups. MAP and HR were significantly higher in the placebo group (p < 0.001). Conclusion: A single bolus of remifentanil is safe method to attenuate prolonged QTc associated with insertion of LMA.

متن کاملEffects of intraoperative single bolus fentanyl administration and remifentanil infusion on postoperative nausea and vomiting
BACKGROUND Although the use of postoperative opioids is a well-known risk factor for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), few studies have been performed on the effects of intraoperative opioids on PONV. We examined the effects of a single bolus administration of fentanyl during anesthesia induction and the intraoperative infusion of remifentanil on PONV. METHODS Two hundred and fifty wo...

Aim and Background: Rapid and Confident induction of anesthesia is a goal for the anesthesiologist. In the meanwhile, most of anesthetic drugs are not without complication. In this study we evaluated the effects of anesthesia induction with halothane by single breath on hemodynamic parameters in pediatric patients. Methods and Materials: In this study 50 children were enrolled. For induction o...
متن کاملThe optimal exhaled concentration of sevoflurane for intubation without neuromuscular blockade using clinical bolus doses of remifentanil
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the optimal exhaled sevoflurane concentration that produces adequate endotracheal intubation conditions when sevoflurane is combined with the different bolus doses of remifentanil used in clinical practice. METHODS The patients were randomized to 3 groups (groups 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0), receiving remifentanil bolus doses of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 μg/...
متن کاملCardiac electrophysiological effects of remifentanil: study in a closed-chest porcine model.
BACKGROUND Remifentanil has been implicated as causing intraoperative bradyarrhythmias, but little information is available regarding its cardiac electrophysiological effects. Thus, we evaluated the cardiac electrophysiological properties before and after remifentanil in a closed-chest porcine model. METHODS Eighteen Landrace-Large pigs were premedicated with ketamine and anaesthetized with p...
